Historical Documentation
Knapp Architects prepare a wide range of historical documentation. Based on historical research, architectural history, and evaluation of existing conditions, these studies provide information and analysis for development, management, and planning for historic resources. Our firm has prepared numerous historic structures reports, a recognized format used widely in the United States for long-term operation and improvement of historic buildings and sites. Our work also includes historic resource surveys, and more focused studies such as the Historic Resource Evaluations and Supplemental Information Forms required by the San Francisco Planning Department. In the case of a colonial revival house slated for demolition, Knapp Architects prepared a study to determine the potential historical importance of the particular building. We wrote a study to determine if a building just outside the Civic Center Historic District was a contributing resource to the area. Some of our historic evaluation studies have included research into the cultural and ethnic heritage of the original occupants, as in a building in San Francisco's Mission District which was originally an Italian American bakery. We bring to these reports a command of the technical requirements of historical research, experience with the applicable professional and regulatory standards, and a practical sense of the needs and options facing owners and stakeholders.
